Fun & Easy Crab Activities for Preschoolers

Crab activities for preschoolers are an easy way to introduce ocean animals while still keeping learning fun.

When my son was little, beach topics were always a hit. Shells, waves, sea creatures, anything related to the ocean held his attention. Crabs quickly became a favorite, mostly because of the sideways walk and those big claws.

If youโ€™re planning an ocean theme or summer activities, these crab crafts, printable science activities, and simple projects are a fun place to start.

Crab Crafts for Preschoolers

Crafts are usually the easiest way to start an ocean theme with younger kids. These crab projects use simple supplies and give preschoolers plenty of chances to paint, cut, and glue.

  • C is for Crab Handprint Art – This alphabet craft turns a painted handprint into a crab. Itโ€™s a fun way to introduce the letter C while letting kids make something theyโ€™ll be proud to show off.
  • Crab Paper Bag Puppet – A simple brown paper bag becomes a crab puppet once the claws, eyes, and legs are added. Kids usually end up using these for storytelling or pretend play afterward.
  • Apple Stamped Crab Craft – Cut an apple in half and use it as a stamp to create the crabโ€™s body. Itโ€™s a quick craft and the printed shapes work surprisingly well.
  • Orange Peel Crab Craft – This one uses orange peels as the crab body, with paper legs and googly eyes to finish it off. A slightly silly craft that preschoolers tend to enjoy.
  • Paper Plate Crab Craft – Paint a paper plate red, add legs and claws, and you have a bright crab ready for display.
  • 3D Crab Craft – Using cardstock and a printable template, kids can build a crab that actually stands up on its own.
  • Paper Plate Crab Shaker – Part craft, part music activity. Two paper plates and a little rice turn into a crab shaker kids can use during songs.
  • Styrofoam Cup Sea Crabs – Foam cups make a sturdy base for these little sea crabs. Pipe cleaners work well for the legs.
  • Cute & Easy Crab Craft Template – A printable template that gives kids the basic shape so they can focus on decorating their crab however they like.

Crab Worksheets and Printables

If you want to add a little learning alongside the crafts, these crab worksheets work well for preschool and early elementary ages. They mix coloring, simple labeling, and basic science ideas in a way that still feels like an activity rather than a lesson.

Book-Based Learning: A House for Hermit Crab

Eric Carleโ€™s A House for Hermit Crab fits really well with a crab or ocean theme. The story follows a hermit crab as he searches for a new shell and decorates it along the way.

  • Printable Activity Pack – A set of simple worksheets and crafts that follow the story and give kids a few hands-on activities after reading.
  • Hermit Crab Bookish Play – A fun way for kids to retell the story through pretend play while exploring the different sea creatures that appear in the book.

Crab-Themed Books

Adding a few crab books is an easy way to start an ocean theme or wind down after craft time. These picture books introduce young kids to crabs and other sea creatures through simple stories and bright illustrations.

Ocean Animal Crafts Featuring Crabs

If you’re doing a full ocean theme, itโ€™s fun to include a few crafts that feature different sea creatures as well as crabs.

If you try any of these crab activities, Iโ€™d love to hear which one your preschoolers enjoyed most.
