Learn About the Great Wall of China

Use the information below to help children complete the worksheet or check their answers afterwards. It also works well as a quick introduction before starting an Ancient China or world geography lesson.

Where is it located?

The Great Wall of China stretches across northern China through several provinces, including Hebei, Shanxi, Beijing, Tianjin, and Inner Mongolia. Although it’s often thought of as one long wall, it’s actually a series of connected walls and fortifications built over many centuries.

When was it built?

Construction began during the Qin Dynasty (221–206 BC) in the 3rd century BC. The wall was expanded, rebuilt, and repaired by later dynasties, with many of the sections visited today dating from the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644 AD).

What materials were used in making it?

Builders used different materials depending on what was available locally. Stone, bricks, tamped earth, and wood were commonly used, while some sections were held together with sticky rice mortar.

Who built it?

The Great Wall was built over many centuries by soldiers, peasants, prisoners, and skilled workers. Different Chinese emperors ordered new sections to be built and older sections repaired as the empire grew.

Why was it built?

The Great Wall was built for several reasons:

  • To defend China from invasions by northern nomadic groups, including the Mongols and Xiongnu.
  • To protect the empire’s borders and control who entered and left the country.
  • To improve communication by allowing soldiers to send warning signals between watchtowers.
  • To safeguard trade routes and help troops and messengers travel more safely.
  • To demonstrate the power of the Chinese empire under different dynasties.
