Father’s Day Scattergories Printable Game for Families

Father’s Day Scattergories has quietly become one of our most-loved traditions.

What started as a quick game to fill time between lunch and dessert turned into an annual laugh-fest—especially when someone insists that “hot dog” counts as a type of car.

This year’s version includes a free Father’s Day printable with four themed boards using the letters HERO, BEST, LOVE, and CARE.

It’s simple enough for younger kids, still fun for teens, and guaranteed to bring out some unexpected answers from the grown-ups too.

Scattergories Game for Father’s Day

Every Father’s Day, we try to mix in something light and fun—something that gets everyone laughing without needing a screen or a complicated setup.

Father’s Day Scattergories has become a go-to for exactly that. It’s quick to play, easy to explain, and always ends in a few ridiculous answers we’ll be quoting all weekend.

This version is themed just for the occasion, with category prompts that reflect the quirks, favorites, and interests of dads everywhere. It’s low-prep and family-friendly, and it somehow brings out everyone’s competitive side in the best way.

Setting Up Your Father’s Day Scattergories Game

You’ll only need a few minutes to get going. Here’s what we do:

  • Print off enough copies of the free Scattergories list printable sheets—you’ll find the PDF at the bottom of the post.
  • Hand out pens or pencils (or go the reusable route with laminating and dry-erase markers).
  • Grab a timer—two to five minutes per round usually works great depending on the age group.
  • Keep score on a pad of paper or just let the game play out for fun.

It’s an easy addition to your Father’s Day plans—whether you’re between activities or looking for something fun to wrap up the day.

How to Play

The rules are simple:

Each player fills in the categories using only words that start with the designated letter for that round (like H, B, L, or C). Try to come up with answers that no one else will think of—unique answers score a point.

Once the timer’s up, everyone reads their answers aloud. If two people wrote the same thing, they cross it out and get no points for that one. Add up your scores after each round, and the person with the highest total at the end wins.

We usually aim for three or four rounds, but feel free to keep going if everyone’s still into it. What I love most is how it sparks conversations—sometimes you learn something surprising (like your kid thinks your “hobby” is mowing the lawn).

Categories Included

  • Word to describe dad
  • Type of car
  • Dad’s favorite food
  • Occupation
  • A boy name
  • Sports team name
  • Food you grill
  • Father’s Day gift
  • Type of sport
  • Hobby of Dad

Each game board features a different letter at the top: HERO, BEST, LOVE, and CARE—a fun little detail that keeps the rounds feeling fresh.
