Roald Dahl Memory Game Printable

We first used this Roald Dahl memory game after finishing Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and it instantly became a hit.

Matching familiar characters made the stories stick a little more, especially for my son who learns best through hands-on play.

Whether youโ€™re planning for Roald Dahl Day or just want a low-prep activity tied to the books, this printable game is a fun, simple way to keep the reading going.

Roald Dahl Matching Game

If you’re looking for a simple way to extend the fun after reading The BFG or Matilda, this Roald Dahl game is an easy win.

Itโ€™s low-prep, hands-on, and works well for mixed ages, especially if you scale it up or down by how many cards you use.

Weโ€™ve used it on quiet afternoons, during World Book Day, and even as a calm-down activity after a read-aloud session. All you need is a printer and a bit of cutting time, and youโ€™re ready to play.

How to Print and Prepare the Game

The memory game printable includes 4 pages, each with 12 unique images featuring characters and items from Matilda, The BFG, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and The Twits.

To play, youโ€™ll need to print each page twice so you have matching pairs. If you’re starting small (especially with younger kids), just choose one page and print it twice for a 12-pair game. For the full version, print all four pages twice to make 48 matching pairs.

A few of the cards are in black and white, these are fun to color in before cutting, and it helps kids connect with the characters. I recommend coloring before trimming to save time.

We prefer printing on cardstock so the images donโ€™t show through, and a paper cutter makes it quicker to prep the cards. Scissors work just fine if thatโ€™s what you have on hand. Youโ€™ll end up with either 24 or 96 total cards, depending on the version you print.

How to Play

  1. Mix up the cards and lay them face-down on a table.
  2. For the smaller set, use a 6×4 layout. For the full game, 8 rows of 12 works best.
  3. Players take turns flipping over two cards at a time.
  4. If they match, the player keeps the pair. If not, flip them back and let the next person try.
  5. Play continues until all pairs are found.
  6. Whoever has the most pairs at the end wins!

We like to give out a sticker from the Roald Dahl sticker book to the winner, but honestly, the fun of recognizing favorite characters is a reward in itself.
