Free Printable Insect Matching Game
This free printable insect matching game is an easy way for kids to practice memory skills while learning to recognize different bugs and insects.
We first played it during a bug unit when my son was in preschool, and it quickly became one of our go-to quiet-time activities.
Matching the cards helped him learn the insect names and notice differences between bees, wasps, butterflies, ladybugs, and spiders.

What’s Included in the Bug Matching Game
This memory game printable is free for personal and classroom use. You’ll find the PDF at the bottom of the post.
The game includes two sets of 12 bug-themed cards featuring bees, butterflies, ladybugs, ants, spiders, and more.
- One set has pictures only.
- The second has the same pictures with simple descriptions underneath.
Kids need to match each picture card with its corresponding description card, adding a little more challenge than a standard matching game.
How to Set Up the Insect Matching Game
Print both sheets on white cardstock. One sheet contains the pictures, while the other includes the matching pictures and descriptions.
We colored the backs of ours with crayons and markers before cutting them out. It was an easy extra activity and, more importantly, stopped us being able to see through the cards!
Cut out all 24 cards. Laminating them first is worthwhile if you’re planning to use the game more than once.
Shuffle the cards and place them face down. A 4 Ă— 6 grid works well.

Bugs Included in the Printable
The cards include:
- 3 Spiders
- 1 Ant
- 1 Ladybug with 10 spots
- 1 Ladybug with 9 spots
- 1 Queen Bee
- 1 Bumble Bee
- 1 Flying Bumble Bee
- 1 Wasp
- 2 Red Butterflies
- 2 Blue Butterflies
- 2 Yellow Butterflies

How to Play the Insect Memory Game
Players take turns turning over two cards.
The aim is to match a picture-only card with the corresponding picture and description card.
If the cards match, the player keeps the pair and takes another turn. If they don’t, turn them face down again and play passes to the next person.
Continue until all 12 pairs have been found. The player with the most pairs wins.

Ways to Use the Insect Cards
There is more going on here than just remembering where the cards are.
The descriptions encourage kids to notice details such as the number of ladybug spots, butterfly colors, and the differences between bees and wasps. Reading the descriptions aloud also helps reinforce the names of the different bugs.
For younger kids, you can leave the cards face up and simply ask them to find the matching pairs. Once they’ve got the hang of that, turn them over and play it as a traditional memory game.
