Free Constitution Day Crown Printable
This Constitution Day crown is a fun, low-prep activity for celebrating September 17 with elementary students.
Kids can color their favorite design, cut it out, and turn it into a wearable crown while learning about the U.S. Constitution, “We the People,” and the significance of Constitution Day.

Make Your Own Constitution Day Crown
The free printable includes six Constitution Day hat designs, so kids can choose the one they like best.
The designs include:
- We the People with a Constitution scroll and patriotic star
- George Washington with a quill and copy of the Constitution
- The Preamble to the U.S. Constitution
- A patriotic We the People star design
- September 17 with a map of the United States
- September 17 with the American flag
There are also several printable headband extenders with flags, stars, 1787, and Constitution-themed designs.
I’d print the crown bases on cardstock if you want them to hold their shape a little better. Regular printer paper works too, particularly if you’re only using them for the day.
Let kids color their crown before cutting it out, then attach one of the extender strips with tape, glue, or staples.
If you’re using staples, make sure the ends face outward so they don’t scratch little heads.
Why Celebrate Constitution Day on September 17?
Constitution Day is observed every year on September 17, marking the day the U.S. Constitution was signed in Philadelphia in 1787.
It’s a good opportunity to introduce younger students to some of the basic ideas behind the Constitution without turning it into a full government lesson.
Even simple questions work well alongside the crown activity:
- What is the Constitution?
- Why was it written?
- What does “We the People” mean?
- Why is 1787 important?
- Who helped write and sign the Constitution?

Constitution Day Hat Craft for the Classroom
These printable crowns work especially well for elementary classrooms because there isn’t much prep involved.
Print one design for the whole class or let students choose their favorite.
The large outlined letters and illustrations also give kids plenty to color, so the activity can double as a quiet morning task, social studies center, or early finisher activity.
Once finished, students can wear their crowns during your Constitution Day lesson or take them home afterward.
I particularly like the We the People crown for younger students because those three famous words give you an easy starting point for talking about what the Constitution represents.

A short read-aloud works really well alongside the crown activity, especially for younger elementary students who are just starting to learn what the Constitution is.
We the Kids: The Preamble to the Constitution of the United States – This is probably the best match for the crowns because it focuses on the Preamble and helps explain what “We the People” means in a kid-friendly way.
What Is the Constitution? – A good choice for elementary students who want a little more background on why the Constitution was written, who was involved, and how it shaped the U.S. government.
Shh! We’re Writing the Constitution – This tells the story of the Constitutional Convention in a much more engaging way than a textbook and works especially well for Constitution Day or Constitution Week.
