The monument stands in Agra, in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It overlooks the Yamuna River, adding to its peaceful setting.

What materials were used?
The main structure was built from white marble brought from Rajasthan and decorated with intricate inlays of precious and semi-precious stones, including jasper, jade, crystal, and turquoise.
Who built it?
Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan commissioned the mausoleum in memory of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Thousands of architects, artisans, and laborers helped bring the project to life.

It was created to honor Mumtaz Mahal after she died during childbirth. Today, the monument is both a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
