How to Use This Writing Prompt Generator
Choose a grade level and select Story, Journal, Opinion, or Informative writing. Story mode also lets students choose a theme, including funny, fantasy, mystery, adventure, realistic fiction, or science fiction.
Click Generate a New Prompt to create an age-appropriate writing idea. In Story mode, the character, setting, and problem can each be changed individually without replacing the entire prompt.
Students can copy or share their prompt, open the tool in full-screen mode for classroom use, and select No repeat prompts to avoid seeing the same idea again.
Writing Prompt Activities for Kids
Use the generator for bell ringers, writing centers, independent practice, group storytelling, or a quick activity when students cannot decide what to write.
You can also:
- Give the whole class one prompt and compare the different stories they create
- Let students generate several prompts before choosing their favorite
- Sketch the character or setting before beginning a story
