Word Scramble Generator
Create a custom puzzle in seconds with this free word scramble generator. Add any spelling or vocabulary list, choose whether to include clues or a word bank, and print it with an optional answer key.
It’s an easy way to turn your own word list into a quick classroom activity or vocabulary review.
How to Make Your Own Word Scramble
Add your words to the first box, one per line. You can use spelling words, vocabulary, themed word lists, or anything else you’re working on.
Add optional clues if you want students to think about the meaning of each word as well as the spelling. You can also include a word bank, create an answer key, or switch the words to uppercase.
When you’re ready, click Print Worksheet. Your puzzle will open with space for students to write their answers, plus an answer key on a separate page if you selected one.
Print it again if you want another version. The letters are scrambled into a new arrangement each time.
Adjusting the Difficulty
For younger students, use shorter words and keep the word bank turned on. For a harder puzzle, choose longer words or remove the word bank.
Clues are also useful for vocabulary practice because students have to identify the word as well as unscramble it. For mixed-ability groups, you can use the same list and simply change the amount of support.
Want another activity using the same vocabulary? You can also create a custom word search from your own list.
