3 Free Football Acrostic Poem Templates

If you’ve got a kid who eats, sleeps, and breathes sport, a football acrostic poem might be the writing assignment that actually sticks.

Mine took one look at the word “FOOTBALL” running down the side of the page and immediately started brainstorming touchdown dances and favorite plays.

It turned out to be a surprisingly easy way to sneak in some creative writing, no convincing required.

Acrostic Poem for Football

These printable templates turn football enthusiasm into something creative and fun.

Each one uses the word FOOTBALL vertically, giving kids space to write a line that connects with the game, whether it’s about touchdowns, teamwork, or game day excitement.

One version is simple and clean, great for younger kids who like to color (it includes four footballs to decorate).

The other two have illustrated players and a bit more detail, ideal for kids who enjoy customizing their work with flair.

They’re easy to use during quiet time, writing centers, or even as a quick activity before a big game.

Football Acrostic Poem Examples

Here are two examples to help spark ideas, with versions suited to different age levels:

For Younger Kids:

Fun with friends,
Outside we play,
Over the grass,
Touchdowns today!
Ball in the air,
Aim for the goal,
Let’s all cheer,
Love this game, whole!

Pair this with our football word search for even more themed fun.

For Upper Elementary Grades:

Fierce and ready, we take the field,
Outsmarting opponents, never to yield.
Onward we push, teamwork is key,
Tactics and strategy, victory we see.
Brave in the face of every play,
Achieving our goals in every way.
Loyal to our team, giving our all,
Legendary moments, we live for football.

These poems show how techniques like alliteration, rhythm, and rhyme can bring an acrostic to life.

Whether your child is just getting into poetry or already enjoys creative writing, these templates offer a fun way to mix sports and language.

And if word games are a hit too, try our football Scattergories for another great literacy-meets-sports activity.

Fun Poetry Books for Kids

Once we saw how well the football acrostic poem went over, I started looking for other poetry books that felt fun and approachable, especially ones that didn’t feel like “schoolwork.”

These have been real wins in our house and might be a good next step if your child enjoys writing their own poems.

Good Sports has been especially great for bridging that gap between movement and reading. It’s full of short, high-energy poems that made my son laugh, and think. If you have a kid who’d rather be on the field than with a book, this is a good one to try.

Autumn: An Alphabet Acrostic lines up nicely with the football theme. Each page uses a seasonal word as the spine of an acrostic, which makes it a natural follow-up if your child wants to write more poems after the FOOTBALL one.

Bow-Tie Pasta is completely different, but in the best way. Each poem uses a type of pasta as a prompt, and the result is silly, unexpected, and surprisingly smart. It helped show my son that poetry doesn’t have to rhyme, or even make total sense, to be fun.

The Random House Book of Poetry for Children is more of a staple. We don’t read it straight through, but we’ve pulled it off the shelf plenty of times when we needed a quick poem to read aloud or something short for quiet time. It’s a solid addition if you’re building a little poetry shelf at home.

And if you’re planning activities for game day, this Super Bowl word search fits right in.
