Free Squirrel Worksheets

These free squirrel worksheets are a fun way for kids to learn more about one of the most familiar woodland animals.

The printable pack includes three activities covering squirrel anatomy, characteristics, habitat, diet, movement, and interesting facts. Kids can label the parts of a squirrel, complete their own squirrel research, and sort different foods to discover what squirrels eat.

Designed for elementary students, these worksheets work well for science lessons, nature studies, fall activities, or a wider woodland animal unit.

Answer sheets are also included, making the activities easy to use at home or in the classroom.

Squirrel Activities Included

The printable pack contains three squirrel activities that can be used together for a short science or nature study or individually alongside other woodland animal lessons.

Parts of a Squirrel Worksheet

Start with the squirrel anatomy worksheet, where kids use the word bank to label six parts of the squirrel: ears, tail, paws, teeth, nose, and body.

This is a simple way to introduce squirrel anatomy and encourage children to look closely at the physical features that help identify the animal. Once they have finished labeling the diagram, they can color the squirrel.

For some extra coloring fun, our fall color by number worksheets also include a squirrel page.

All About Squirrels Research Worksheet

The research activity gives kids space to find and record their own squirrel facts. They will investigate four main areas: appearance, habitat and diet, movement, and interesting facts about squirrels.

Children can research where squirrels live, what they eat, how they move, and some of the physical characteristics that make squirrels well suited to life in trees.

There is also space to record eight interesting squirrel facts, making this a useful activity for practicing independent research and informational writing.

What Do Squirrels Eat?

The final worksheet focuses on a squirrel’s diet. Kids cut out ten food pictures and decide whether each belongs in the “Squirrels Eat This” or “Squirrels Don’t Eat This” column.

The foods include acorns, apples, mushrooms, insects, berries, bread, cookies, chips, candy, and cheese. It’s a hands-on way to reinforce that squirrels are omnivores and eat both plant and animal foods.

Answer sheets are included for all three worksheets, so you can quickly check each activity when it’s complete.

Books About Squirrels for Kids

I like adding a couple of squirrel books alongside the worksheets, especially when kids are completing the research page. These are good choices for learning more without turning it into a huge unit study.

The Nature Kid’s Guide to Squirrels – My pick for the research worksheet, with plenty of photographs and easy-to-find squirrel facts.

Those Darn Squirrels! – A funny read-aloud that makes a nice break from the nonfiction activities.

The Secret Life of Squirrels – Real squirrel photographs combined with miniature scenes make this a particularly fun choice.

More Woodland Animal Worksheets

If you’re learning about more than just squirrels, I’ve also created a complete set of woodland animal worksheets covering 10 different forest animals.

The pack includes the same three activities for bears, beavers, chipmunks, deer, foxes, hedgehogs, rabbits, raccoons, skunks, and squirrels, with answer sheets included.

It’s an easy way to turn this squirrel activity into a larger woodland or forest animal study without having to find separate resources for every animal.
