What Are the Life Stages of a Frog?

The frog life cycle has five main stages. As frogs grow, they go through a process called metamorphosis, changing from eggs into fully grown adult frogs.

  • Egg (Frogspawn) – Tiny jelly-like clusters of eggs are laid in ponds or other calm water.
  • Tadpole – The tadpole hatches from the egg and breathes through gills while swimming with its tail.
  • Tadpole with Legs – Hind legs begin to grow, preparing the tadpole for life on land.
  • Froglet – Front legs develop, lungs replace the gills, and the tail gradually disappears.
  • Adult Frog – The fully grown frog lives on land and in water and is ready to reproduce, beginning the life cycle again.

Some frog species can live for up to 10 years in the wild. For more hands-on learning, check out our parts of a frog printable, a great companion to these frog life cycle worksheets.
