In our house, the Elf on the Shelf doesn’t just wait until December to make an appearance, she kicks off the fun during Halloween!

Every year, our Halloween Elf on the Shelf joins in the spooky celebrations, arriving just before the big day to help decorate and add some mischief to our home.

We love getting creative by dressing her up in Halloween costumes, and the kids look forward to her spooky surprises.

Halloween Elf on the Shelf Ideas

Our Halloween Elf on the Shelf makes her appearance the night before Halloween, transforming the house with spooky decorations.

She’s not the usual Christmas elf, Twinkletoes, but her mysterious cousin who arrives dressed in a creepy Halloween costume and leaves behind fun, spooky gifts like fake spiders or a Halloween-themed book.

After Halloween, she heads back to the North Pole to give Santa a quick update before Twinkletoes returns on December 1st. It’s like a little pre-check before the full holiday season begins!

Unlike our Christmas Elf, this Halloween version doesn’t move around, her main job is adding that extra touch of spooky fun by decorating the house.

Elf on the Shelf Halloween Costumes

Each year, I love switching things up with our Halloween Elf’s costumes, and I’ve found some fantastic accessories to make her look extra spooky! She’s always dressed in something a little scary to fit the Halloween vibe.

One of my favorites was when we mummified her, I used an old white tea towel, ripped it into strips, and added a bit of red food coloring for that eerie touch. It was a fun and easy DIY costume that the kids loved.

Skeleton Elf Costume for Spooky Fun
This skeleton outfit instantly became one of our favorites, it’s just spooky enough without being too scary. We’ve used it to turn our elf into a “graveyard guard,” placing her next to mini tombstones and a flashlight. It fits snugly on the elf and adds just the right touch of Halloween mischief.

Scary Child Elf Halloween Outfit
This one leans into creepy Halloween vibes in the best way. We set our elf up next to a plastic cauldron with this costume on, and it gave serious horror-movie energy (my son thought it was hilarious). The tiny details on the costume make it feel like a mini horror character.

Let’s Go Ghouls Elf Halloween Set
A bit more playful than spooky, this costume is great for younger kids who like Halloween without the full-on fright. We paired it with a note that said, “Let’s get spooky!” and used glow-in-the-dark stickers to decorate her scene. It’s festive and fun, with a pop of Halloween color.

16" Posable Plastic Skeleton
16″ Posable Plastic Skeleton
Not technically an elf costume, but we’ve used this prop in so many Elf setups. Our elf once rode it like a horse into the living room, which cracked everyone up. You can sit it next to her for a spooky buddy, or set up a graveyard scene if you’re feeling dramatic.

We used this during football season when our elf “joined the team” and left a tiny foam finger and some orange snacks behind. Not traditionally spooky, but great for late October when sports and Halloween overlap. You can personalize it with your kid’s team colors for an extra fun touch.

Miss Skeleton Elf Sweater
This one has a bit of personality, fun and spooky with just enough flair to stand out. Our elf wore it while sitting by a mini skeleton pet (a dollar store dog toy) and left a note saying she adopted a Halloween puppy. The sweater fits well and adds a cute twist.

Skeleton Elf Sweater Elf
This sweater has a simple skeleton print but made a big impact when we paired it with a “doctor’s note” saying our elf had X-ray vision. We set up a tiny clipboard and some cotton balls to complete the look. Great for a quick setup that still feels themed.

X-Ray Outfit for a Quirky Halloween Elf
This one’s more quirky than scary, which we liked, it gave our elf a little mad scientist vibe. We staged her with a flashlight and a mini “lab” sign using blocks, and the X-ray design tied it all together. A fun twist if you want something different from the usual costumes.

October Magic and the Punkin Pixie
This one isn’t a costume but more of a collectible, and we used it to add a bit of seasonal charm to our Elf setup. We placed it near our elf’s arrival spot as her “Halloween helper.” If you like creating a whole scene rather than just dressing up the elf, this adds depth.
