In our house, the Elf on the Shelf doesnโt just wait until December to make an appearance, she kicks off the fun during Halloween!
Every year, our Halloween Elf on the Shelf joins in the spooky celebrations, arriving just before the big day to help decorate and add some mischief to our home.
We love getting creative by dressing her up in Halloween costumes, and the kids look forward to her spooky surprises.
It might sound a little crazy, but the extra bit of Halloween magic always makes the season more fun!

Elf on the Shelf Halloween Costumes
Each year, I love switching things up with our Halloween Elfโs costumes, and Iโve found some fantastic accessories to make her look extra spooky! Sheโs always dressed in something a little scary to fit the Halloween vibe.
One of my favorites was when we mummified her, I used an old white tea towel, ripped it into strips, and added a bit of red food coloring for that eerie touch. It was a fun and easy DIY costume that the kids loved.
Here are some of our top picks for Halloween Elf on the Shelf accessories:
Skeleton Elf Costume for Spooky Fun

This skeleton outfit instantly became one of our favorites, itโs just spooky enough without being too scary. Weโve used it to turn our elf into a โgraveyard guard,โ placing her next to mini tombstones and a flashlight. It fits snugly on the elf and adds just the right touch of Halloween mischief.

    Scary Child Elf Halloween Outfit

This one leans into creepy Halloween vibes in the best way. We set our elf up next to a plastic cauldron with this costume on, and it gave serious horror-movie energy (my son thought it was hilarious). The tiny details on the costume make it feel like a mini horror character.

Let’s Go Ghouls Elf Halloween Set

A bit more playful than spooky, this costume is great for younger kids who like Halloween without the full-on fright. We paired it with a note that said, โLetโs get spooky!โ and used glow-in-the-dark stickers to decorate her scene. Itโs festive and fun, with a pop of Halloween color.

    16″ Posable Plastic Skeleton

Not technically an elf costume, but weโve used this prop in so many Elf setups. Our elf once rode it like a horse into the living room, which cracked everyone up. You can sit it next to her for a spooky buddy, or set up a graveyard scene if youโre feeling dramatic.

    Halloween Pumpkin Elf Plush

I highly recommend the Halloween Elf Pumpkin Doll as a fun twist on Elf on the Shelf for October. The pumpkin face and witch costume make it festive and playful, and at 14 inches itโs the perfect size for little Halloween setups around the house. Itโs well-made, holds up to being moved daily, and blends easily into your dรฉcor. Kids love the idea of a Halloween helper, and itโs become one of my favorite seasonal accessories.

Custom Football Uniform for Elf on the Shelf

We used this during football season when our elf โjoined the teamโ and left a tiny foam finger and some orange snacks behind. Not traditionally spooky, but great for late October when sports and Halloween overlap. You can personalize it with your kidโs team colors for an extra fun touch.

Scary Clown Costume for Elf Mischief

If your kids are into creepy clowns (or love being spooked just a little), this costume is a winner. We set up our elf with this outfit peeking out from a cereal box one morning, total jump scare. The bold colors and creepy vibe definitely bring Halloween energy.

    Elf Spooky Sweater Set

These sweaters strike a good balance between spooky and silly. Weโve used them when we want something quick but still themed, like having our elf โbake Halloween cookiesโ in the kitchen while wearing one. Theyโre easy to use and perfect for low-effort mornings.

    Miss Skeleton Elf Sweater

This one has a bit of personality, fun and spooky with just enough flair to stand out. Our elf wore it while sitting by a mini skeleton pet (a dollar store dog toy) and left a note saying she adopted a Halloween puppy. The sweater fits well and adds a cute twist.

    Skeleton Elf Sweater Elf

This sweater has a simple skeleton print but made a big impact when we paired it with a โdoctorโs noteโ saying our elf had X-ray vision. We set up a tiny clipboard and some cotton balls to complete the look. Great for a quick setup that still feels themed.

X-Ray Outfit for a Quirky Halloween Elf

This oneโs more quirky than scary, which we liked, it gave our elf a little mad scientist vibe. We staged her with a flashlight and a mini โlabโ sign using blocks, and the X-ray design tied it all together. A fun twist if you want something different from the usual costumes.

    Halloween Elf Fairy Door

We added this door to our bookshelf and used it as the elfโs โportalโ from the North Pole. On Halloween morning, she appeared next to it with a trail of candy wrappers and some spiderwebs. It adds a magical, whimsical touch and works well if youโre building a scene.

October Magic and the Punkin Pixie

This one isnโt a costume but more of a collectible, and we used it to add a bit of seasonal charm to our Elf setup. We placed it near our elfโs arrival spot as her โHalloween helper.โ If you like creating a whole scene rather than just dressing up the elf, this adds depth.

    Mischievous Halloween Elf Set

This elf has a cheeky face and wilder design than the classic Christmas version. We used her as the Halloween cousin who arrives early to โinspect the decorationsโ and pull a few harmless pranks. Itโs great if you want to separate the Halloween elf from your December traditions.
