Different Types of Penguins Worksheet (Free Printable)

The types of penguins worksheet became one of those simple activities that worked better than I expected.

Instead of just saying “there are lots of penguin species,” we could actually see the differences side by side, the yellow crests, the spotted bellies, the different face markings.

This printable includes a full-color reference page, a matching page with a word bank, and a black-and-white version for coloring.

It’s ideal for grades 1–3 when you’re introducing animal classification or doing a polar animals unit, because kids aren’t just reading the names, they’re looking closely and making connections.

Fiordland Penguin – From New Zealand, recognizable by its bright yellow eyebrow stripes.

Humboldt Penguin – Lives along the coasts of Peru and Chile, adapted to the cool Humboldt Current rather than polar ice.

Galápagos Penguin – The only penguin species found north of the equator, living in a much warmer climate than most people expect.

Magellanic Penguin – A South American species that nests in burrows and can dive deep to hunt fish.

Royal Penguin – White-faced with striking yellow crests, breeding mainly on Macquarie Island.

Snares Crested Penguin – Another New Zealand species with noticeable yellow crests and strong lifelong pair bonds.
