If I Were A Witch Writing Prompt for Kids

This If I Were a Witch writing prompt is a fun Halloween activity that gets kids imagining everything from their witch name and magical home to broomstick adventures, potions, and unusual pets.

We tried this witch writing worksheet last fall, and it was such a fun surprise. My son didn’t roll his eyes (for once!) and actually got into it. He named his witch “Grizzlebeard,” brewed a potion that turned socks into spiders, and filled out the whole sheet in one go.

It’s one of those printable writing prompts that gives kids enough structure to get started while still leaving plenty of room for creative ideas. It works especially well around Halloween when kids are full of spooky ideas but might not want to sit down and write a whole story.

Witch Writing Prompts Included

We first used this witch worksheet on a rainy October afternoon, and I was surprised by how quickly it got my son writing. No complaints, no hesitation, just lots of ideas about broomstick adventures and potions that made people sing opera.

The worksheet includes six open-ended witch writing prompts that give kids enough direction to get started while leaving plenty of room for imagination:

• My name would be… The sillier the better. My son went with “Professor Pickleboots.
• ”If I were a witch, I would live in… He picked a glow-in-the-dark cave behind a waterfall. This is a great prompt for encouraging descriptive writing.
• My magic broom would take me… Kids can imagine traveling anywhere, from a haunted carnival to another planet.
• My pet companion would be… Cats are an obvious choice, but unicorns, talking raccoons, and flying jellyfish are all fair game. If they need inspiration, our random witch name generator can help them come up with names for their witch and magical companions.
• One potion I’d create would… This one usually produces some of the funniest answers. My son’s potion turned broccoli into candy.
• The most magical thing about being a witch… A chance to think beyond spells and potions and imagine what having magical powers would really be like.
