What’s Included in the Printable

The free printable includes six different Johnny Appleseed crown designs, along with extender strips to help the headbands fit different sizes.

The designs feature Johnny Appleseed, apples, apple trees, and his famous cooking-pot-style hat. There is also a Happy Johnny Appleseed Day design and a crown where kids can trace the words Johnny Appleseed.
All of the crowns are black and white, so kids can color and decorate their chosen design before putting it together.

The printable also includes separate extender strips. These can be printed on white paper for kids to color or on colored paper if you want to add some color without using extra ink.

How to Make a Johnny Appleseed Hat

You will need:

  • Johnny Appleseed crown template
  • White cardstock or paper
  • Crayons, markers, or colored pencils
  • Scissors
  • Tape or a stapler

Let the kids choose which Johnny Appleseed hat they want to make and color the pictures and lettering.

Cut around the crown base and the extender strips. Younger children may need some help with this part.

Attach an extender strip to each side of the crown with tape or staples. Wrap the crown around the child’s head to find the right size, then secure the ends together.

The finished crowns can be worn during your Johnny Appleseed lesson or taken home at the end of the day.

Johnny Appleseed Day Activity

Johnny Appleseed Day is commonly celebrated on September 26, making these crowns an easy addition to your September lesson plans.

Before making the crowns, introduce kids to the real person behind the legend. Johnny Appleseed’s real name was John Chapman, and he became known for establishing and caring for apple nurseries as he traveled through parts of the American frontier.

His story is also a fun way to introduce the difference between history and folklore. Kids can share what they already know about Johnny Appleseed, then see which parts of the familiar story are fact and which have become part of the legend.

Johnny Appleseed Books for Kids

I also like pairing the crowns with a book. It gives kids some context about who Johnny Appleseed was before they start coloring.

  • Johnny Appleseed – probably the best-known picture book option; great for the younger elementary audience.
  • Who Was Johnny Appleseed? – better for kids who want more actual history; roughly grades 2–5.
  • Johnny Appleseed – an accessible early-reader biography, so it gives you a nice middle ground.
