Free Printable Elf on the Shelf Word Search
Every December, we bring out this Elf on the Shelf word search as an easy way to sneak in some festive fun without needing a big setup.
After years of Elf antics, I’ve learned that having a few quick activities like this ready to go is a total sanity-saver, especially on those mornings when I forget to move the Elf!
This printable is simple enough for younger kids to enjoy, but still fun for older ones too.
Plus, the elf name list always sparks a few giggles, my son’s favorite is “Twinkletoes,” and he’s convinced that should’ve been our Elf’s name from the start.

Elf Word Search Printable
Sometimes we just need a quiet, low-prep activity, and this Elf on the Shelf word search has been a favorite in our house for exactly that reason.
Word searches are one of my go-to homeschool breaks because they sneak in spelling and pattern recognition without feeling like schoolwork.
This one’s great for upper elementary and even middle schoolers, with elf names hidden in every direction, frontwards, backwards, diagonally, you name it. A couple of them are tricky (Twinkletoes always stumps us), so I’ve included the answer key just in case.
There are also two elf-themed images to color once the puzzle’s finished, which is a nice bonus if your kids like a little downtime after the challenge.
I usually suggest circling the words or using a highlighter, crossing out the letters tends to make it harder to find the overlapping names.
And if your kids get into the elf theme, pair it with our If I Were an Elf writing prompt for a bit of creative storytelling.
Elf on the Shelf Answer Key
There are 16 popular Elf names hidden in the puzzle, and a few of them can be surprisingly tricky to spot, especially with all the diagonal and backward placements!

- Cookie
