Owl Handprint Craft

This owl handprint craft is an easy activity for preschoolers and younger kids, using painted handprints to create the owl’s wings.

We first made it as a quick Halloween activity when my son wanted to paint, but I didn’t want a huge mess. The free printable owl template makes it simple, and there are two pages of Halloween stickers kids can cut out and use to decorate their finished owl.

It takes about 10 minutes to make and works well as a fall or Halloween craft, classroom activity, or handprint keepsake.

How to Make an Owl Handprint Craft

The free PDF includes three pages: the owl handprint template on the first page, followed by two pages of colorful Halloween stickers for kids to cut out and use to decorate their finished craft.

You’ll need the printable template, washable paint, a paintbrush, scissors, and glue. Googly eyes are optional but make a fun finishing touch.

Print the owl template on white or colored paper. If you want to use the Halloween stickers, print those pages on white paper so the colors show clearly. Cardstock works well if you want a sturdier finished craft.

Let your child choose a paint color for the wings. We’ve used both orange and blue, and both worked really well.

Use a small brush to cover one hand with paint, then press it onto one side of the owl with the fingers pointing upward. Press gently across the whole hand before lifting it straight up to avoid smudging. Repeat with the other hand to create the second wing.

Once the paint is dry, add googly eyes if you have them, then cut out some of the printable stickers to decorate around the owl.

The extra stickers can also be used for Halloween cards, treat bags, or other fall crafts. My son ended up covering half his folder with them!

Owl Books to Pair With the Craft

Pairing the owl handprint craft with a picture book is an easy way to turn it into a longer preschool or classroom activity. These are three fun choices for younger kids:

Owl Babies – A sweet story about three baby owls waiting for their mother to return, and a great choice for an owl-themed activity.

Little Owl’s Night – Follow Little Owl as he explores the nighttime forest and meets other nocturnal animals.
