What Is the Life Cycle of a Butterfly?
The butterfly life cycle has four stages: egg, caterpillar (larva), chrysalis (pupa), and adult butterfly.
Egg: Female butterflies lay tiny eggs on leaves. When the eggs hatch, caterpillars emerge.
Caterpillar: Caterpillars spend most of their time eating and growing. As they get bigger, they shed their skin several times.
Chrysalis: Once fully grown, the caterpillar forms a chrysalis. Inside, it undergoes metamorphosis and transforms into a butterfly.
Adult Butterfly: The butterfly emerges from the chrysalis, dries its wings, and begins searching for food and a mate before the cycle starts again.
Butterflies are also important pollinators, helping many plants and flowers reproduce.
