Free First Day of Homeschool Sign Printable
The first day of homeschool sign always sneaks into our photos, even if everything else feels a bit chaotic.
One year, Freddie wore a superhero cape. Another, he held the sign upside down on purpose.
We’re not big on first-day rituals, but having something simple, like a themed sign to color in, helps us mark the moment.
If you’re the same, you’ll find these first day of homeschool printables useful for keeping things low-key but memorable.

My First Day of Homeschool Printable
We’ve used a first day of homeschool sign every year since we started homeschooling, and it’s become a simple tradition that makes the morning feel special.
This free printable set includes three homeschool-specific designs in both color and black and white, including a fun superhero theme.
We print them on cardstock so they hold up for photos, then tuck them into our homeschool portfolio.
Each poster includes space for your child to fill in the school year, their grade, favorite subject, a fun “I love…” section, and even their current life goal (which has ranged from billionaire to professional gamer in our house).
What’s Included in the First Day of School Sign Printable Pack
The printable pack includes six signs in total, three labeled for first day of homeschool and three for first day of school.
Each version is offered in both full color and black and white. The content is the same across all versions, giving kids space to personalize their sign with:
- The school year
- Their current grade
- Favorite subject
- Something they love (e.g., “I love dinosaurs!”)
- Life goal (This one always makes me smile, my son once wrote “to own a tank.”)
Whether your kids are heading back to school or starting another year at home, these printables give them a fun way to reflect and share a little bit about themselves.
More First Day of Homeschool Ideas
Over the years, we’ve tried lots of first day of homeschool ideas, some planned, some spontaneous, but the ones that stick are simple, fun, and low-pressure.
A homeschool scavenger hunt is always a hit here. It gets the kids moving and helps them ease into the day while finding their supplies.
We also like starting with an all about me worksheet, it gives kids a chance to share a bit about themselves and makes a great addition to the portfolio.
And for a quick win, check out our first day of school activities bundle, it includes everything you need to get started without overthinking it.
For a little extra excitement, I’ve also rounded up some of the best gifts for homeschoolers that make day one feel special.
Prefer Something Reusable or Ready-Made?
If you’d rather skip the printer altogether, there are some lovely first day of school signs you can reuse year after year.
Options like chalkboard or dry-erase boards make it easy to update your child’s grade, favorite subject, and goals each new school year.
You’ll find plenty of customizable versions too, whether you’re after something minimalist or more colorful and fun.
These make great keepsakes, especially if you’re building a back-to-school photo tradition.
Here are a few favorites to check out:
