What is the Lymphatic System?
The lymphatic system is a network of vessels, lymph nodes, and organs that helps protect the body from infection. It also removes excess fluid and waste while returning fluid back to the bloodstream.
A clear fluid called lymph travels through the lymphatic system carrying white blood cells that help fight bacteria, viruses, and other harmful germs. Together, these structures play an important role in keeping the immune system healthy.
Tonsil
The tonsils are found at the back of the throat. They help trap germs entering through the mouth and nose, making them an important part of the body’s first line of defense against infection.
Neck lymph nodes (cervical)
Cervical lymph nodes are small, bean-shaped glands in the neck. They filter lymph and contain white blood cells that help fight infection.
Thoracic duct
The thoracic duct is the largest lymphatic vessel in the body. It carries lymph from most of the body back into the bloodstream.

Thymus gland
The thymus gland sits in the chest and produces T cells, a type of white blood cell that helps the immune system recognize and destroy harmful germs.
Armpit lymph nodes (axillary)

Spleen
The spleen filters blood, removes old red blood cells, stores blood cells, and produces white blood cells that help fight infection.
Peyer’s patch
Peyer’s patches are groups of lymphatic tissue found in the small intestine. They help monitor bacteria and other germs entering through the digestive system.
Groin lymph nodes (inguinal)
Inguinal lymph nodes are found in the groin. Like other lymph nodes, they filter lymph and help the body fight infection.
