We are really lucky as Freddie has always enjoyed reading, so much so that we have books everywhere.
Now, this is where my problem starts, as we homeschool we have loads of curriculum books and loads of workbooks and even more reading books. So I thought rather than buying a new house to keep all the books in, I would find an online reading program.
We have recently come across an awesome online reading program from Lightsail for Homeschoolers.
**Disclosure – I have been compensated for my time, as always all reviews are my own.**
The first thing that caught my attention was how bright and colorful this program is. This is so important for us, so many of the curriculums we have found were definitely made with adults in mind and not children.
Online Reading Program
LightSail for Homeschoolers is an adaptive online language arts program for grades pre-K through 12. A foundation in the science of reading and writing combined with the experience of a team of home educators creates a family-friendly learning experience advancing skills in reading, writing, vocabulary, and fluency. LightSail provides tens of thousands of ChildSafe books and multimedia resources from leading publishers such as World Book and Lerner Publishing.
Lightsail 4 Main Pillars of Literacy
When the child logs on to their platform the first thing they have to do is answer 30 reading comprehension questions to establish their Lexile score. Depending on what score they achieve the relevant books at their level appear in the library. With over ten thousand books they are sure to find something they enjoy.

The writing program complements the reading assignments, and for us more importantly, they are in small chunks. So no struggling to write for hours at a time. What is also great is you can chat with your child through the platform.

As the children have completed their Lexile rating when they first log into Lightsail, vocabulary is only included when they are ready. It is an adaptive learning program, so when the child is ready for the next level, they have access to more relevant material.

Of course, the other three pillars are important, fluency is something we have probably ignored. Freddie is now 11 and I have to admit, I haven’t heard him read for at least a year. He has always enjoyed reading, and at bedtime, he will always read for about an hour before he falls asleep. Now of course, when we are doing our core curriculum he will read sections of the book, or whatever else it is. But this is nothing I have focussed on. What is great with Lightsail is that the child can record themselves reading aloud, and send the recording to us, the parents!

Online Reading Program – Library
With over 10,000 books in the online library, you are sure to find something you like. This is just perfect timing for us as Freddie was stuck on the Book Bingo he was playing over the summer. He is sure to complete it all in the coming weeks with Lightsail.
Lightsail for Homeschool – Special Pricing
As Lighthsail for Homeschoolers is a new platform, they have a special launch price ($99/year for Premium; $65/year for Standard) through 8/31/21. You can set up an account for free, to see if you like it. So go and take a look.
Let me know in the comments below if you have tried Lightsail for homeschoolers, I would love to hear your feedback.
