Free Halloween Acrostic Poem Templates
This printable includes four different Halloween acrostic poem templates, each with the word HALLOWEEN running vertically down the page.
There are two colorful designs with spooky Halloween backgrounds, plus two black and white versions featuring bats, pumpkins, ghosts, spiders, and other Halloween illustrations for kids to color.
Kids can use each letter in HALLOWEEN to begin a word, phrase, or sentence. The poem doesn’t need to rhyme, so they can keep it simple or get as creative as they like.
We usually start by thinking of Halloween words for each letter before writing the poem. If they get stuck, the word list and completed example below can help with ideas.
Halloween Acrostic Poem Example
If kids aren’t sure where to start, seeing a finished poem can make the activity much easier. Here’s a simple Halloween acrostic poem example using a mix of spooky words and short phrases:
Haunted houses creak at night
Autumn leaves blow through the air
Little ghosts come out to play
Lanterns glow beside the door
Owls hoot under the moon
Witches fly across the sky
Eerie shadows start to appear
Everyone gets ready for treats
Night falls on Halloween
An acrostic poem doesn’t have to rhyme. Kids can use single words, phrases, or complete sentences as long as each line begins with the correct letter.

Halloween Word Ideas for Acrostic Poems
Coming up with a word for every letter in HALLOWEEN can be tricky, especially with the two E’s and two L’s. Here are some Halloween acrostic poem words kids can use for inspiration:
H – Halloween, haunted, hat, howl, horror, hayride
A – afraid, autumn, apple, alarming, apparition
L – lantern, leaves, lightning, lurking, laughter
L – lights, lollipop, labyrinth, legend, lurking
O – October, owl, orange, outfit, ominous
W – witch, wand, web, werewolf, wicked
E – eerie, eyeballs, enchanted, excitement, evening
E – enchanting, evil, eerie, everyone, excited
N – night, nightmare, neighborhood, nocturnal, nervous
Kids don’t have to use these words at the beginning of every line exactly as written. They can use them as writing prompts for longer phrases or sentences that fit their poem.
