Fun Leaf Facts for Kids
Leaves do more than just fall off trees in autumn—they’re an important part of how plants survive. Here are some simple facts to share with kids while they color:
- Leaves make food for the plant through photosynthesis, using sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide.
- They release oxygen into the air, which people and animals need to breathe.
- Stomata are tiny holes on the leaf’s surface that help it take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen.
- In fall, chlorophyll breaks down, and the green fades to red, orange, or yellow.
- Leaf shapes can help identify trees—each type has its own size, edge, and vein pattern.
- Some leaves are even used in medicine, like aloe vera for burns.
- Many leaves are edible, like spinach, lettuce, and basil.
