Free Halloween Acrostic Poem Templates
Writing a Halloween acrostic poem has become one of our favorite ways to mix creativity with a little seasonal fun.
I first tried it with my son when he was around 8, and it turned into a surprisingly engaging writing activity, especially once he realized he didn’t have to rhyme every line.
We’ve used these acrostic poem templates over the years for homeschool, Halloween parties, and quiet afternoons when he just wanted something festive but low-pressure.
Whether your kids love spooky stories or just enjoy coloring, this simple poetry activity adds a fun twist to language practice and helps spark ideas without overwhelming them.

Why We Love Acrostic Poems for Halloween
Acrostic poems are one of the easiest ways to get kids writing without overwhelming them. When my son was younger, we started using them around holidays as a fun, low-pressure way to build writing confidence.
Halloween became one of our favorites, there’s just something about spooky words that gets the creativity flowing.
They’re simple enough for younger kids to try on their own, but flexible enough that older kids can add humor, suspense, or even a bit of rhyme if they want.
Tips for Using the Halloween Acrostic Poem Template
Print one of the four poem templates below (we usually go with the black-and-white version so my son can color it after writing). Each sheet uses the word HALLOWEEN down the side to guide the poem.
Encourage your child to write a line for each letter. It doesn’t have to rhyme, just focus on creative word choices. Some kids love using alliteration or spooky sound effects. Others keep it simple. Either way works.
We often do these together during a quiet afternoon or as part of our Halloween writing week. If your kids enjoy this, they might also like our free Halloween-themed games and writing prompts.
Halloween Word Ideas for Acrostic Poems
We’ve included four printable templates, two in color and two in black and white (because ink always seems to run low right before a holiday!).
The black-and-white versions double as coloring pages once the poem is finished, which adds a creative bonus.
If your kids need help getting started, a themed word list can make all the difference. You can go full spooky or keep it light, it’s totally up to them. Here are some Halloween word ideas we’ve used to spark inspiration:

- National Geographic Book of Nature Poetry – Beautiful images paired with thoughtful poems, great for quiet reading time.
- Write Your Own Haiku for Kids – A simple, hands-on guide that helped my son try out a whole new style of poetry on his own.
