30 Free Printable Elf on the Shelf Notes

Every year, once December hits, I start out with big Elf on the Shelf plans, fun setups, silly scenes, the works.

But let’s be honest, some nights I’m just too tired to get creative. That’s exactly why I put together these free printable Elf on the Shelf notes.

They’ve saved me more times than I can count. Whether our Elf is arriving late, I forgot to move him, or I just need a quick idea before bed, these little cards make things feel magical without any stress.

I even added blank ones for sweet, personalized messages when your child’s had a great week or something special is coming up.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed or out of ideas, this set of notes is a simple way to keep the Elf fun going, especially when time (and energy) is running low.

How to Use These Elf Notes (and Why They’re a Lifesaver)

These printable Elf notes are designed to take the pressure off during the holiday rush. Below, I’ve shared what’s included and ideas for using them, whether you’re going all out or just trying to stay sane.

We’ve had an Elf visiting our house for nearly a decade now, and in the early days, I had every intention of doing elaborate setups. But life happens. We forgot. More than once. There just wasn’t always time to build candy cane jail cells or wrap the kitchen in foil.

That’s where these notes come in. Keep them handy, in a drawer, next to the hidden chocolate stash, and when you need a quick fix, just move the Elf and add a note.

Some notes include a fun activity, while others are just simple messages. I’ve also included blank ones so you can leave something personal, like a “well done at school” or “thanks for being helpful” reminder from the Elf.

It’s a small touch that adds a little Christmas magic, even on your most exhausted nights.

Elf on the Shelf Printable Notes

These free notes from the Elf on the Shelf are for personal use and come as a 4-page PDF, 2 in color and 2 in black and white. You’ll get 30 ready-to-use notes plus 12 blanks for adding your own message.

The set is split into two types:

  • Notes that suggest an activity (like baking cookies or writing a wish list)
  • Simple messages for days when you just need a quick Elf fix

They’re perfect for busy nights, special occasions, or last-minute setups. I always keep mine tucked away, ready to go when time is short but I still want to keep the Elf magic alive.

Elf Notes with Christmas Activities

Bake some cookies – This one’s always a favorite. Our Elf leaves a note asking for help with baking, and we usually end up making cookies for Santa together on Christmas Eve. It’s a simple way to turn an everyday task into a fun memory.

Write your Christmas wish list – We usually use this note early in December, mostly so I have a clue what my son actually wants! If your kids change their minds as often as mine, grab our free Santa wish list printable to make it easier.

Play some games – Perfect for a cozy evening. Our Elf sometimes brings a board game suggestion or a printable game. Try our Elf memory game or browse the best Christmas board games if you’re looking for something new.

Read a Christmas story – This one’s great for early readers, or for a family read-aloud. Stick Man is still a favorite in our house, it gets me every time. You’ll find more of our top Christmas books here.

Get crafty – We’re not a super crafty family most of the year, but in December, that changes. Whether it’s making new decorations or just a festive scene, this note gives us a reason to pull out the supplies and do something creative.

Write Christmas cards – Let the kids personalize their cards this year! Our printable coloring Christmas cards are easy to use and add a special touch to notes for teachers, friends, or neighbors.

Draw a Christmas picture – Even reluctant artists usually enjoy this one. If they need a nudge, our Christmas coloring sheets give them a place to start.

Christmas read-aloud time – Snuggling on the sofa with a good holiday book is one of our favorite traditions. Whether your kids are little or nearly grown, there’s something special about ending the day with a story.

Decorate the tree – I’ll admit, I don’t love “help” decorating the main tree. So a few years ago, we got a small one for my son’s room, loaded it with Star Wars ornaments, and let him go wild. This note is a great way to make that feel like a tradition too.

And if your Elf is running a bit late this year, don’t worry, our free Elf on the Shelf late arrival letter can help explain everything with a sprinkle of magic.

Elf Notes for When You Have No Time to Plan

Some nights you just need something fast, and that’s exactly what these notes are for. No setups, no props (unless you want them), just quick ways to keep the Elf magic going.

Let’s watch a Christmas movie – This one’s always a hit. My favorite is Christmas with the Kranks, but my son will happily rewatch Home Alone (just not the newest one, we don’t speak of it!). Pop on a classic, and let the Elf suggest it.

Santa has sent you some treats – If I’m completely out of energy, this is the note I reach for. A few candy canes, a small chocolate, or a fun little gift from the Dollar Tree, done. I use this one at least three times each December.

Do you want to build a snowman? – Totally depends where you live! No snow here in South Florida, but if the weather allows, this is a fun outdoor challenge. You could even tweak it for indoor play, use playdough or cotton balls instead.

Let’s have a sing-song – This note is great if you’re in the mood for a holiday playlist. Whether you sing along at home or just play music while making breakfast, it sets a cheerful tone for the day.

Oh no, I couldn’t move… you went to bed too late! – A gentle nudge when bedtime’s been a struggle. We’ve used this one a few times, it works like a charm and adds a little accountability from the Elf.

Let’s go see the Christmas lights – Bundle up (or not, depending on your location) and walk or drive around to check out neighborhood decorations. When we lived in England, it was a car ride; now in Florida, it’s a warm evening walk.

Santa says hi! – So simple, but kids love it. No extra effort required, just a sweet little reminder that Santa’s watching and cheering them on.

Make sure your bedroom is tidy – Another helpful one for when the house feels a bit chaotic. A note from the Elf is often more motivating than a reminder from mom!

You had a great week! – Celebrate the wins with this positive note. I like to pair it with a little surprise, maybe a Christmas book or a new ornament as a reward.

Blank Elf notes – I’ve included 12 blank cards so you can personalize them however you’d like, perfect for surprise outings, visits with family, or even a trip to see Santa.

And if you’re looking for something interactive, don’t miss our free Elf candy cane hunt, it’s a fun way to turn even a low-key morning into a little adventure.
