We’ve used it for everything from family game night to classroom brain breaks, and each time, the silly answers and surprise wins make it a hit.
Our free Halloween-themed boards use spooky words like TRICK, TREAT, GHOST, and WITCH to give the classic categories game a fun seasonal twist.

Halloween Scattergories Game
Our Halloween Scattergories game puts a spooky twist on the classic category game. Players race against the clock to think of unique answers for Halloween-themed categories, making it a fun choice for classroom parties, brain breaks, family game nights, or October activities.
It’s quick to set up, easy to learn, and works well with both small groups and larger classes.
Halloween Scattergories Categories
The printable includes four Halloween Scattergories boards based on the words GHOST, TRICK, WITCH, and TREAT. Each board has seven spooky categories and five letters to play.
The Halloween Scattergories categories include:
- Favorite candy
- Something orange
- Scary place
- Halloween costume
- Halloween movie
- Favorite villain
- Monster names
- Halloween song
- Found in a haunted house
- Places to hide
- Scary books
- Spells
- Creepy crawlies
- Scary sounds
The TRICK and WITCH boards use the first set of categories, while GHOST and TREAT use the second, giving you two different Halloween Scattergories lists to play.
How to Play Halloween Scattergories
- Give each player a Halloween Scattergories game board and a pencil.
- Set a timer for around two minutes, or allow a little longer for younger players.
- Players work through the categories on their board, writing an answer that begins with the corresponding letter in GHOST, TRICK, WITCH, or TREAT.
- When time is up, compare answers as a group.
- Players earn one point for each unique answer. If two or more players have the same answer, no one scores a point for it.
- Add up the points to find the winner, then move on to another board if you want to keep playing.
For example, if the letter is W and the category is Halloween costumes, “witch” could be an answer. The trick is to think of something that no one else in the group will choose.
For younger players, try working in pairs or allowing extra time. In a classroom, the game also works well as a writing warm-up, early-finisher activity, or small-group game.
