Free First Day of School Crown Printable
A first day of school crown is one of those simple things that helps the first morning run a little smoother.
Whether your kids are walking into preschool, starting kindergarten, or learning at home, making a crown gives them something to focus on and a bit of fun to break the ice.
It’s part of a set of free back to school worksheets I’ve used when I needed low-prep activities that still felt meaningful.

Making Your Back to School Crown
These first day of school crowns are easy to prep and a fun way to ease into day one. You’ll get 15 pages total, including two crown styles and options labeled for:
- First day of school
- Preschool
- Pre-K
- Kindergarten
- 1st grade
- 2nd grade
- Homeschool (see how we celebrate the first day of homeschool.)
One version lets kids write their name and age, while the other has simple school-themed images to color. Both are perfect for helping younger students feel included and celebrated.
For best results, print the crowns on cardstock or colored paper. If you’re working with preschoolers or kindergartners, it helps to cut the templates ahead of time. First and second graders can usually handle it on their own.
Each design includes a headband extender, but sentence strips work just as well, less cutting, more durable, and easier to size. Use glue or staples (facing outward to avoid scratches) to assemble.
Why Make a First Day of School Headband?
It’s an easy activity that helps the first day feel a bit more fun and a little less overwhelming.
Kids like having something they’ve made themselves, and wearing their crown or headband gives them a boost of confidence without much effort.
It also gives them something to talk about, whether they’re sharing it with classmates, teachers, or family. For younger kids, especially in preschool or kindergarten, it’s a gentle way to ease into the day.
And as a bonus, it makes a great keepsake for parents and a quick win for working on fine motor skills.
Best Back to School Books for Preschool and Kindergarten
When my son was getting ready for his first day, I was way more anxious than he was. Reading together became our way to settle those nerves (mostly mine).
These first day of school books helped us both feel more prepared, and even a little excited, for what was coming.
On the First Day of Kindergarten – This became a favorite right away. It follows the rhythm of “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” but with school moments instead. My son loved guessing what would come next, and it made the idea of classroom routines feel less intimidating.
The Best Seat in Kindergarten – This one helped him picture what the classroom might be like. It’s a calm, simple story about finding your place, and made it easier to talk about what the first day might look like.
The Berenstain Bears go to School – I remembered this from when I was a kid, so it was fun to pass it on. Sister Bear’s nerves were exactly what we’d been feeling, and seeing her settle in by the end helped us both.
The Night Before Kindergarten – We read this right before bed the night before his first day. It’s playful and comforting, and the rhythm helped wind us down. It became a bit of a tradition for us after that.
