Halloween Scattergories
Spooky Scattergories is a fun way to keep students engaged while building vocabulary, spelling, and quick-thinking skills.
It works especially well as a holiday-themed brain break, writing warm-up, or small-group activity.
What’s Included
This free printable set comes with four Halloween-themed Scattergories boards featuring the words GHOST, TRICK, WITCH, and TREAT.
Each board has 12 spooky categories (like “scary books” or “Halloween songs”) and blank spaces to fill in words that start with the chosen letter.
How to Play in a Classroom Setting
- Go over the rules with your students. The goal is to think of one word per category that starts with a specific letter, and to come up with answers no one else has.
- Hand out a game sheet and pencil to each student. You can project the category board if you’d prefer to play as a class.
- Choose a random letter (you can draw from a bowl or write a letter on the board).
- Set a timer, two minutes is usually enough, but younger students may need more time.
- Students fill in as many categories as they can using words that start with the selected letter.
- Go over the answers together. If two students write the same word, no one gets a point. Unique answers are worth one point each.
- Tally the scores and announce the winner, or just play for fun!
This game works across grade levels and can easily be adjusted for skill level. You can even pair students up or use it as a rotating center activity for early finishers.
