Best Paint for Handprint Art

Over the years, we’ve tried several different paints for handprint projects, and our favorite is Crayola Washable Kids’ Paint. The colors are bright, it washes off little hands easily, and it works well for getting a clear handprint on the page.

Colorations Tempera Paint is another good option. It has a smooth consistency and dries fairly quickly, which is handy when you’re making several handprint crafts at once.

For the best results with our printable handprint templates, we usually have these supplies ready:

  • Cardstock or colored paper – Thicker paper holds up much better to wet paint than regular printer paper.
  • Paintbrush – Brushing paint onto the hand gives you more control than dipping it directly into paint.
  • Glitter glue pens – An easy way to add details once the handprint has dried.
  • Crayons or markers – Use these to add faces, patterns, names, or other details.
  • Googly eyes – Optional, but especially fun for animal and monster handprint crafts.
  • Wipes – Definitely worth having within reach before the paint comes out!
